Will my car insurance cover a loss when I’m driving a golf cart on San Antonio golf course?

I read an online story this morning about a man that killed someone while driving his golf cart.  Of course I don’t know the details of the accident, but apparently the golfer was drunk while driving a golf cart on a golf course, crossed a golf cart intersection without stopping, and collided with another golf cart and killed a passenger in the second golf cart.  After reading this story, I came to wonder, do you know if your car or home insurance would cover a liability claim?  As an agent, the first question I would ask is, where can I find coverage?  I know that golf carts are not considered autos under a Texas auto policy because they are not registered and are not allowed on public roadways.  So the car insurance policy that you purchased with your local San Antonio insurance agent will likely decline a claim.  The next question is, would this be considered a personal liability claim?  Assuming that you have a standard, unendorsed (i.e., not changed by adding or deleting coverage) Texas Homeowners policy Form A then you should find coverage under the liability section.  The coverage would up the liability limits but only if you are using the golf cart on your premises or on the golf course.  So if you live in a golfing neighborhood, such The Dominion in San Antonio, drive your golf cart on the street on your way to the golf course, you are on your own until you actually are on the golf course itself because there is no coverage while driving a golf cart on city streets.  As always, if you have questions, I recommend calling your agent, reading your policy and look for any exclusions pertaining to golf carts.

If an Air Conditioning Repair Man Ruins My AC Will His General Liability Insurance Cover it?

From time to time, a customer or friend will come to me asking for insurance advice.  One time, a longtime friend from San Antonio asked, “If an AC repair man damages my $7,000 AC unit while he was working on it, will his insurance cover it?”  The answer, in short, is it depends.  First of all, my friend must file a claim with the AC repair man’s insurance company so an adjuster can research the policy to confirm coverage.  However, in general, if the air conditioning repair man only had a general liability policy with no professional liability coverage, then unfortunately there isn’t coverage for the AC unit itself.  The general liability policy generally excludes property damage to items that are in the care, custody, and control of the insured, in this case the AC repair man.  To fill that gap in coverage, it is always recommended to add a professional liability coverage.  Unfortunately for my friend, the AC repair man only had general liability insurance with no professional liability coverage and the damage to the AC was not covered.

There are Many Car Insurance Companies in San Antonio-Who should I Choose?

The car insurance market in San Antonio is very competitive.  I like to clump these companies into two different classes:  The first one offers auto liability insurance at a very low rate.  You can see their billboards offering auto insurance liability at less than $30/month!  Most of these companies specialize in 30 day liability only policies.  Sometimes, these policies contain many exclusions which won’t be discovered until the need to file a claim.  I normally do not recommend buying 30 day liability only policies.  The second type of company is one that doesn’t necessarily specialize in covering one part of an car insurance policy.  For example, the insurance company might included coverage for physical damage at a reasonable rate.  These insurance companies typically “want” to establish a long term relationship with their client and will many times offer perks for being a longstanding client.
